If you work in IT or often find yourself fixing computers for friends and family, you probably remember the glory days of Hiren’s Boot CD. It was the one disc that could fix almost anything. But times have changed, and modern UEFI computers require modern tools.
Enter Medicat USB.
Medicat is widely considered the ultimate “Swiss Army Knife” for computer repair. It replaces the need to carry twenty different flash drives by combining the best diagnostic, recovery, and security tools into a single, bootable USB drive.
In this in-depth guide, we will explore what Medicat is, why it’s essential, and provide a step-by-step tutorial on how to create your own Medicat USB stick.
What is Medicat USB?
Medicat USB is a community-maintained, multiboot toolkit created by developer Jayro. Unlike standard boot drives that run just one operating system (like a Windows Installer), Medicat utilizes Ventoy to let you boot into a menu where you can choose from dozens of pre-loaded environments.
What’s Inside the Kit?
Mini Windows 10 PE: A lightweight version of Windows that runs entirely from RAM, allowing you to browse files, run tools, and backup data even if the PC’s main OS is dead.
Malwarebytes: For scanning and removing viruses offline.
Password Removal Tools: To reset forgotten Windows login passwords.
Partition Tools: To resize, wipe, or fix hard drive partitions.
Backup & Restore: Tools like Acronis, Macrium Reflect, and Symantec Ghost.
Linux Distros: Includes a mini Linux environment for advanced file recovery.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, you will need a few things. Medicat is a massive suite of tools, so a standard 8GB drive won’t cut it.
A USB Flash Drive: 32GB is the absolute minimum, but we strongly recommend 64GB or larger. (USB 3.0 or 3.1 is preferred for speed).
A Windows PC: To run the installer.
Stable Internet Connection: The download is large (approx. 20GB – 30GB).
Patience: The installation process involves downloading and extracting many files.
Important Warning: Antivirus False Positives
Read this before downloading: Medicat contains powerful tools used for password resetting, network sniffing, and low-level system modification. These are legitimate tools for an IT Admin, but Antivirus software (Windows Defender, McAfee, etc.) will flag them as viruses or “HackTools.”
This is a False Positive.
You MUST disable your Real-Time Antivirus protection before downloading and installing Medicat, or your antivirus will corrupt the installation by deleting essential files.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
We will use the official Medicat Installer, which automates the downloading and formatting process.
Step 1: Disable Antivirus
Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
Click Manage settings.
Turn OFF “Real-time protection.”
Step 2: Download the Medicat Installer
Visit the official Medicat website: https://medicatusb.com/
Navigate to the Download section.
Download the Medicat Installer.bat (Batch file).
Step 3: Run the Installer
Plug in your USB drive. Warning: All data on this drive will be erased.
Right-click the
Medicat_Installer.batfile and select Run as Administrator.A command-line window will open. It will ask you to verify that you have disabled your antivirus. Type
Yand press Enter.
Step 4: Select Your Drive
The installer will list all connected drives. Identify your USB drive by its size and letter (e.g.,
Disk 2 - 64GB).Enter the number corresponding to your USB drive.
Confirm that you want to format the drive.
Step 5: Download & Install
The installer will now automatically download the latest Medicat files (via Torrent or Direct Download, depending on the version).
Once downloaded, it will install Ventoy to the USB drive and extract the Medicat files onto it.
Note: This process can take 30 minutes to an hour depending on your internet and USB speed.
Step 6: Re-Enable Antivirus & Exclude
Once the installation says “Complete,” you can turn your Antivirus back on.
Pro Tip: To prevent Windows Defender from deleting files from your USB stick later, add the entire USB drive letter to your Antivirus Exclusions list.
How to Use Your Medicat USB
Now that you have the ultimate tool, here is how to use it:
Plug it in: Insert the USB into the computer you need to fix.
Boot Menu: Turn on the computer and immediately press the Boot Menu Key (usually F12, F8, F10, or Esc, depending on the brand).
Select USB: Choose your USB drive from the list (select the UEFI option if available).
Ventoy Menu: You will see the Medicat menu. Use arrow keys to navigate.
Select Mini Windows 10 to boot into a familiar desktop environment for general repairs.
Navigate folders to find specific bootable ISOs like MemTest86 or CloneZilla.
Why Choose Medicat Over Ventoy Alone?
While Ventoy allows you to drag and drop ISOs, Medicat comes pre-configured.
Custom Menus: It has organized categories for tools.
Portable Apps: The Mini Windows 10 environment is pre-loaded with hundreds of portable apps (apps that run without installation) for data recovery, hardware testing, and system cleaning.
Conclusion
Medicat USB is the modern standard for PC repair. Whether you are resetting a forgotten password, recovering photos from a dying hard drive, or scanning for deep-rooted malware, this free toolset is indispensable. Build one today, and keep it on your keychain—you never know when you’ll need to save the day.
